Granted the widespread proliferation of coffee houses these past twenty or thirty years, one would assume a corresponding decrease in the reputation of home coffee makers, but rather these items are actually selling as briskly as they ever have, being one of the most iconic stars of late-night TV infomercials. So why should this be? Why should sales not have taken a hit with ever more businesses selling coffee?

Well, it relies on why people go to coffee houses and why they purchase coffee makers – there may be rather different motivations behind each conduct. In the scenario of the coffee house, it’s about the ambience, the environment. Chains such as Starbucks are simply reviving the practice that was prevalent in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Europe, where people escaped crammed quarters at home by visiting cafes and saloons to read, do their work, or even have a proper supper. Today’s establishments offer much the same amenities, and it’s no accident that college students are among the most numerous of customers for a chain coffee house.

Consumers who buy their own coffee makers, on the other hand, probably can enjoy their cup well enough at home, or they just need it right away and as a part of their daily routine. Therefore, a coffee-making machine lets them wake up or come home from work to freshly brewed coffee that’s ready for consumption without the fuss and bother of a queue. Yet the same wide range of flavors is available, the same diversity of roasts and beans and blends, and all at a much lower cost, normally. Finally, there’s assured seating!

Finally, the number of businesses dedicated to serving coffee has only made people want to buy coffee machines of their own. After all, why not have the best of both worlds?

Cell phones have a amazingly long history, going all the way back to the photophones of none other than Alexander Graham Bell himself, devices that carried sound waves on light beams. No, really! Wireless telephony goes back to 1880, believe it or not, when on June 3 the world’s first ever telephone message was sent over Bell’s photophone. Unfortunately, the technology was easily foiled by common outdoors phenomena such as clouds and so the world would have to wait until the development of radiophones many decades later.

After all, cell phones operate on radio waves, and as a result are nothing more than radiophones on their own in many respects. It was during World War II that such gadgets really took off, though it wasn’t until the 1970s that hand-held phones became available for civilian use. The first commercial automated cellular network was introduced in Japan in 1979 for use by metropolitan Tokyo, and in just five years expanded to offer nationwide coverage, the first country to enjoy wireless services. All of Scandinavia followed suit in 1981, with Chicago, United States of America coming online in 1983. The rest of the decade saw the United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico adopting wireless providers in turn.

“Modern,” or Second Generation (2G), technology became popular only in the 1990s, nonetheless. At the beginning, the global subscriber base numbered only just under twelve and a half million people. Twenty years later, over four and a half billion people enjoyed wireless telephony throughout the world. 3G speeds and capabilities became obtainable in 2001, and now 4G technology is being implemented – all a far cry from the early days of veritable bricks weighing several pounds that could only handle analog calls!

Certainly, modern cell phones are not even phones anymore, to judge by the number of duties they typically perform. They play games and music and take photos and shoot video, just for starters. People also use them to “text” or write short immediate messages to one another, and many are capable of surfing the web as well. In fact, the feasible range of uses for a cell phone seems to keep growing, such that they are now even capable of providing one’s location in most major urban centers around the world!

And so they have been more justifiably called “smartphones” instead. And perhaps the day is soon coming when the convergence device, the do-it-all vision of futurists from the 1990s, will be an actual reality, a veritable holy grail of electrical engineers that will is ultraportable and ultra-powerful. Can superintelligence be far behind?

Indeed, the day will come when brain-computer interfacing will make us ourselves the convergence devices we seek to create! And then can collective intelligence and telepathy be far behind that?

Sony Cell Phones have unveiled one of its newest phones, the Hazel. The Hazel is not your average phone. While it incorporates the many new technologies that are expected in new phones and Unlocked Cell Phones today it also brings a new aspect to the table. The name Hazel may help guide you in the right direction if you are not able to guess. The Hazel, by Sony Cell Phones, is an environmentally friendly mobile phone.

So what constitutes an environmentally safe or friendly cell phone? The lines can blur here, however it seems that Sony Cell Phones has done a good job of not just placing a label on it with giving it the proper “green” features. These features make it part of the Sony-Ericsson Green Heart Program, help to reduce CO2 emissions, among other environmentally conscious specifications. These include being made of recycled plastic materials, an e-manual embedded into the phone, a condensed user guide, it is free of hazardous chemicals, a green calculator, the walk mate eco application, a charger with low power consumption, minimal packaging and waterborne paint. That is seemingly a very honest effort to make the phone environmentally friendly.

But, this is not simply a phone for tree huggers and the like, rather it has many other excellent, standard phone features. These include a quality voice feature through noise shield, clear voice and intelligent voice adaptation, Google Maps and Search, GPS, easy access to social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter as well as free weather forecasts from Accuweather, A 5 megapixel camera and even face detection features. It offers 10 hours of talk time and 430 hours of standby time.

So perhaps it is time to throw out some of our ideas about “going green” and general liberal ideals. We can be honest when saying that this phone will not be saving the world. However, if it does cut down on an individual’s carbon foot print, what’s not to like about that. It offers longer talk time than many cell phones, has many similar or better features than most phones and it’s not sucking everything it can out of this world. So why not get one?

It seems inevitable that phones and electronics in general, will become more and more conscious of the environment. This transition may be made either to keep their collective conscious clear, maybe to avoid being pegged as having a large carbon footprint or maybe to appeal to the large liberal “green” movement. This would positively impact us all, regardless of the true intentions behind the change.

Welcome to another edition of Isaac Toussie’s real estate insights. Today Isaac Toussie will be talking about an upstate town that once rivaled New York for industry and commerce. Taken from from the native term “Uppu-qui-ipis-in” which means “reed-covered hut by the water,” Poughkeepsie today has expanded beyond huts into a permanent city of some forty-three thousand individuals. Poughkeepsie is in fact the name of both a town and a city, both municipalities right next to one another because the city actually used to be the western part of the town (and, incidentally, was an independent village in its own right before that). But for legal purposes, and such services as fire and police, the two communities are often viewed as one, with a total population in excess of seventy-five thousand people. The town is actually home to much more people than the city, which counts only some thirty-thousand-plus citizens.

Thus, it’s expected that their respective real estate markets will be quite different. A closer examination of the latest demographical figures shows that the town is much more affluent than the city, with a median income of over fifty-five thousand dollars a year as opposed to well under thirty-thousand for the city. Indeed, the Town of Poughkeepsie is able to provide for its own emergency services, which are staffed by fully paid civil servants, and not volunteers as is the case with many a suburban community.

As for the City of Poughkeepsie, it’s been severely battered by the economic malaise afflicting the rest of the state and the country as a whole. Average listing price in the two-week period between January 20, 2010 and February 3, 2010 fell almost thirty thousand dollars, to two hundred and fifty-one thousand dollars, though almost five thousand of that has been “recovered” as of February 10. However, the actual median selling price, based on two hundred and thirty-four homes sold, is almost thirty-three thousand dollars short of the median listing price, at barely two hundred and twenty thousand. Average price per square foot in the city is one hundred and thirty-two dollars.

Poughkeepsie was once the “Queen City of the Hudson,” but has suffered economic difficulties for the past twenty-plus years and was just beginning to recover in fits and starts when the recent recessionary woes struck. This has obvious implications for local realty, both residential and commercial. The Town of Poughkeepsie, however, seems rather more vibrant in comparison. International Business Machines, Incorporated, was once the most notable employer around, and while the company still maintains a campus in town, most of its production has been moved elsewhere. Vassar College in the City of Poughkeepsie is arguably the most notable employer now.

Should you purchase any Poughkeepsie property? Well, there’s no way it’s reclaiming its glory days, so the local real estate market is never going to be a hot one. But if your goals are more modest, and especially if you live in the city yourself, then certainly, Poughkeepsie property can be a solid investment.

Unique Wedding gifts can be some of the hardest things to purchase, because they should ideally convey the occasion while remaining true to the recipients – both of them. It can be tough enough buying for one individual, but with two the challenge more than doubles, because tastes and wishes may alter considerably between husband and wife. That is not even taking into consideration that you may not know one of the spouses personally! But there exist a class of wedding gifts which are nearly assured safe and inoffensive while being totally practical and yet not just practical but also stylish at the same time: wine glasses.

Yes, one of the most well liked of wedding gifts is a collection of fine wine glasses for all the stylish occasions to follow in the happy life of the couple. They are both practical yet lovely, unlike precisely utilitarian gifts such as minor home appliances or something like decorative pillows. Quality wine glasses can be rather expensive, which helps demonstrate your esteem for the newlyweds. This kind of wedding gift also serves as a great reminder of happy occasions, as the elegant glassware is broken out of storage for life’s most vital milestones.

The overwhelming majority of wine glasses can be divided into generally recognized classes suspect only to the strictest of connoisseurs and purists : red wine glasses, white wine glasses, champagne flutes, and sherry glasses. Red wine glasses tend to have rounder wider bowls, asserted to extend the rate of oxidization, which exposure to air is said to benefit red wines the very best. White wine glasses alter the most in form and size, but are engineered to prevent oxidization; champagne flutes will have the narrowest mouths because of this. A sherry glass is intended for serving liqueurs and the like. There also exists so-called stemless wine glasses, also known as wine tumblers, and even ISO certified glasses for wine tasting.

The automobile is easily one of the most huge features of almost any developed, civilized society on earth – so much so that their existence is barely even regarded as exceptional among the general populace. And understandably so, considering that as of 2007 there were roughly 806 million cars and light trucks all over the world. That equates to about one car for every eleven people. Nevertheless, in spite of their omnipresence across the modern world, the magnitude of their importance is no less diluted. On the contrary, the all-pervasive numbers and utilities of the automobile have made it an absolutely important facet of modern living.

Since automobiles became the de facto system of transportation, almost the entirety of modern civilization has evolved to accommodate them. The entire fossil fuel industry has been centered by automobiles which, on average, consume 260 billion gallons of diesel or gasoline every year, giving rise to a number of gas station and convenience store chains. Interstate highways spanning for thousands of miles across the country have made necessary an entire industry of companies who supply fast, cheap amenities for traveling motorists, from motels, to fast food, to the odd roadside attraction. A massive portion of the United States’ entire infrastructure is based entirely around automobiles. Even entire cities are designed around the productive layout of roads and the space required to house vehicles parked off the road. Automobiles have become so utterly integral to modern living that there is hardly an aspect in our daily lives not directly impacted, or conceived entirely, by their use.

Nonetheless, while cars are an irreplaceable feature of economic and social logistics for many Americans, many others have found the desire or necessity to reevaluate their roles. In cities with expansive and beneficial public transportation systems, many citizens do not own vehicles. Often times in more densely populated urban areas, most basic necessities are placed within walking distance of one’s residence. In New York City, for example, only about 45% of the population commuted to work in 2005 using independent means. The rest opted for the city’s mass transit system – the most substantial in North America and featuring the busiest subway system in the Western hemisphere.

Reciprocally, people whose occupation may need a commute over vast distances – people whose work demands frequent business trips for example – may not need to own an automobile either. In these cases, they’ll use air or rail travel to commute long distances, normally toward larger cities where they can take advantage of public transportation. Another common practice (and industry that arose alongside the development of automobiles) is for some to rent cars for a short period of time. These rentals typically come with a wide variety of conditions relating to the cost of such rentals, depending on factors such as the make and model of the car, distance traveled, damage incurred, etc. Many offer additional peripheral products, for example insurance, GPS, or entertainment systems. Given the temporary nature of their ownership, some third party companies even offer discounts or additional services, for example Hertz rental car coupons offered by that company. The rental car coupons favor those who travel often but do not wish to own a vehicle.

Automobiles will continue to be a permanent fixture in modern society, and as technology advances, so will the roles, applications, and utilities for them. And as the auto industry advances, one can expect to see the landscape of modern civilization advance with it.

Working capital is one of the most important concerns of any business. Working capital can, at its simplest, be defined as a business’s current assets minus their current liabilities, the result being a numerical representation of a business’s capacity to pay off debt, known as operating liquidity. In layman’s terms, working liquidity is a term that simply equates to the amount of financial leeway or slack given to a business.

If a business has more in the way of financial liabilities than they do assets, they will incur a negative working capital, recognized as a working capital deficiency or deficit. Furthermore, a business needs to be sure that its assets are either in cash form, or can be easily turned to cash – or else their value remains frozen bearing little effect on the equation against operational liabilities.

Management of working capital is perhaps, at its core, the primary concentration of any business owner. Though the specific information aren’t quite as simple, in principle guaranteeing a positive working capital is guaranteeing a profitable business, as opposed to one failing or merely making ends meet. And as such, the procedures that must be taken to guarantee positive operating liquidity are often one in the same as steps taken to ensure a profitable business. Even prior to a grand opening, factors such as place or advertising should be taken into thought as later they will play a large role in impacting working capital.

Once set up and running, there are a great many more concerns to be taken into account. Management of inventory, as an example, is one of them. Associated directly to the basic economic principle of supply and demand, inventory should be supervised so as to make sure that there is exactly the necessary amount of product available for sale. A surplus will equate to squandered funds paid to a supplier for products a business is not able to sell. However, having too little of a product will effortlessly leave you with a scarcity of things to sell, ergo, less profit.

Employee wages and workforce are two other important factors that are directly related. If an employee is paid too generously for the amount of labor they do, then again this will comprise squandered profits. Nonetheless, employees who are underpaid are most times unmotivated and will not work quickly or efficiently, leaving the entire machinery of your business to perform poorly. Underpaid employees whose work cannot be expected to meet the required specifications may require either higher pay grades, or a larger number of employees. Here again, too few employees will leave your business undermanned and operating at only limited capacity, whereas too large a workforce will require more pay. A careful and intricate understanding of the logistics required to efficiently run a business must be achieved, and one must find the optimum balance between the fiscal liabilities of paychecks and the size and competency of your workforce.

Verizon Cell Phones come from a variety of brands and makes. Mainly because of this, shopping can be overwhelming for many consumers. Here is really a list along with descriptions of some with the most well-known new phones available for Verizon Cell Phones.

The LG enV Touch – This mobile phone features a fantastic, full HTML web browser, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and touch-screen interface at the same time as a full QWERTY keyboard. Regrettably the telephone does not carry Wi-Fi and also the browser isn’t usually as fluid as a single might prefer as well as the touch-screen just isn’t the greatest offered. These are all little critiques simply because within the end, this can be a remarkable telephone with an abundance of functions.

The HTC Droid Eris – This telephone characteristics a slim style and numerous characteristics and it performs at a great, though not exceptional level. It does however, have a pinch and zoom multi-touch feature. The internal performance may be slower than desirable but is to be expected as it just isn’t the latest of Android OS versions. Nevertheless it’s a nice contrast towards the Motorola Droid and the price is unbeatable, making it a staple of Verizon Cell Phones.

The RIM BlackBerry Storm 2 – This device brings more memory, an updated operated system, user interface additions and redone touch display together for a powerful new look. It also features Wi-Fi, key rollover and some multi-touch capabilities. However, when compared to the competition the touch display in not as advanced or user friendly, though with its plethora of features, those two things may balance each other out.

The Motorola Droid – This mobile phone feature all the benefits from the Android 2.0 but with a faster web browser, Google Maps Navigation Application as well as improved contact filing and messaging. The overall call quality is improved as is the speed. The QWERTY keyboard is not as advanced as several other devices and the same goes for the music and video capabilities. It unfortunately isn’t compatible with Bluetooth voice dialing. While you can find missing pieces in terms of layout and functions the overall functionality is superb and it can rival any other smart telephone or Verizon Phone to date.

These are just a few of the well-liked choices to date. There’s no black and white, “one is much better than the other,” when it comes to new cell telephone makes. It’s simply a matter of what will work greatest for the customer. Let this be a stepping stone into the next generation of well-liked cell phones.

Since the beginning of the home consumer electronics industry, nearly every huge update or new iteration of an established technology has been accompanied by at least some type of format war, to some degree of severity or another. When Sony’s Betamax ruled the home video market after its release in 1975, it was soon after challenged – and later usurped – by the VHS format presented by JVC. Years later, in order to steer clear of another costly format war, Phillips and Sony both abandoned their initial plans for a video disk format – CDi – and instead collaborated on what would gradually become DVD.

Later, DVD’s position on the video rental market was stunted by Circuit City’s ill-fated strive at replacing them with DIVX – disks that, in spite of one’s ownership, still needed a small fee paid via an internet phone line connection to activate for browsing. By the late 90s, a large number of various file formats for video data fought for domination, but given the sheer number of formats and selective compatibility of many preferred media programs, incompatibility issues plagued each format with equal severity. And for the past ten years or so, satellite cable has been at odds against progressively popular digital cable packages. This trend is a natural consequence of the free market and has persisted in any industry as long as there have been several variations of a similar technology or product provided by more than one source.

After a long period of cooperation between companies in developing next-gen formats to avoid costly and dangerous format wars – most notably the universal standards produced for DVD, HDTV, and Wi-Fi – the ceasefire had ended. This can be applied for the blue ray media too since they play a huge role in the world of blank media these days. Lately has been one of the most drawn out and enduring format wars of attrition since the contention between Betamax and VHS, among the next generation of high definition optical disk formats – Blu Ray disk, and HD DVD – from which Blu Ray disks have surfaced victorious.

Both formats came forth between 2000 and 2002, each offering high definition video and audio and storage capacity that far overtaken their mutual predecessor, DVD, while still preserving the exact physical definitions and ease of use that consumers had gotten used to. Though each format maintained the same physical dimensions that consumers were familiar with – 12cm diameter discs almost the same in appearance to DVDs and CDs – the exact way in which data was stored on the discs and read by hardware differed noticeably, making them entirely incompatible.

Each format was soon backed by an alliance of software and hardware developers, as well as production studios. Most notable perhaps was HD DVD’s adoption by Microsoft and Blu Ray’s sponsorship by Sony, firmly integrating the format war into the high-profile competition in the home videogame console market, with Microsoft’s X-box 360 equipping itself with HD DVD and Sony’s Playstation 3 with Blu Ray. The decisive factors between Blu Ray’s eventual victory was the shift of help by major production studios, and Sony’s decision to directly incorporate Blu Ray technology as the standard for their PS3 – as opposed to the X-box 360’s prerequisite of an addition peripheral to play HD DVDs. Because Blu Ray was now used as Sony’s format for games as well as movies, PS3s alone outsold HD DVD players almost 10 to 1 – including both the X-box 360 peripheral and standalone units. Shortly thereafter, HD DVD’s primary supporter, Toshiba, declared its abandonment of the format in 2008, cementing the success of the Blu Ray disk.

T-Mobile Cell phones has been a conclusive beast when it comes to hitting all of the markets for advertising. They pay a yearly income of $20 million to Catherine Zeta Jones for her commercials. She’s a robust speaker but she isn’t the only one. The fusion of Charles Barkley and Dwayne Wade is also there. The combo is predictable being that they are both NBA basketball stars, though one is from the previous decade and the other one is a current baller. However the 2 teaming up with T-Mobile isn’t such an obvious choice. But it works. Actually both these ad campaigns are successful for several different reasons, but both make T-Mobile Cell phones a gigantic timer in the bizz.

Catherine Zeta Jones brings sex appeal to each and every campaign she touches. The better part of her appeal is the great array of people that are attracted by her. The older men and younger guys are both interested in her. But ladies find her complicated and strong, too. She can actually hit on a bunch of demographics. But no, she isn’t simply standing around in a bikini with T-Mobile Unlocked Cell phones in her hands. Her commercials are actually informative, which is a pleasant change to some advertising out there. But the info joined with her seductive grin as well as the nice features on some of the T-Mobile Cell phones makes it a dynamic campaign.

The Dwayne Wade and Charles Barkley commercials are definitely less educational but have a comedic quality to them that’s certain. Well, just about anything Charles Barkley says is funny and if he’s’s getting defensive or taken out of his comfortable area, then far better. Dwayne Wade on the other hand is simply a straight up slick dude who leaks solid celebrity and superb work ethic. But together, clowning on each other, and trying to break into the others Fave-Five, is at least entertaining. They single-handedly made the Fave-Five a must have on T-Mobile Cell phones. Quite like Dwayne Wade single handedly taking down the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Finals, but that’s’s another story altogether.

Either way, both campaigns have other ways of reaching the same goal. And both appear very successful. They’ve indeed unlocked cell phones marketing techniques. While there is now way to see sales numbers before and after these ad campaigns I would say that if both are still running after a few years on air, then they have got to be rather effective. And in today’s society, the majority agree you want a cell phone, so what is wrong with getting one that fits you, even though you were elbowed in that direction by an advertisement?

Ceiling lights in the bathroom present a particularly engaging design challenge for the professional interior designer because practically most any bathroom deserving of the name will have 1 mirror and mirrors add a level of complexity to the situation as they reflect and intensify light and lighting effects. Ceiling lighting systems can balance out the effects in a few cases.

Ceiling lights could make or break the setting, but it is the mirror that could make or break the light. Of course, tastes change considerably, and while some like an intimate bathroom, dimly lit for perfect relaxation after a grueling day at work or play, others will need blinding brilliance to reflect their always-on personalities. Even in the case of those ceiling lights that may be dimmed by user control a good interior designer should consider all of the mirrors in the room, for different lighting levels will definitely create different aesthetic effects.

Further complicating matters for toilet ceiling lights are the footage on the walls. Many individuals hang pictures up in the bathroom, and it is vital for pro decorators to weigh the wants of the photos or pictures and those made by the mirror. For example, what works with the mirrors may not work in illustrating a beloved picture or image. In this regard, track lights and recessed lighting have been veritable career-savers for many a pro interior designer when faced up to with competing classy demands, for they permit intricately finer control over lighting levels and placement than otherwise possible .

Finally, balance is key , as with many things when it comes to good design sense. Again, sensibilities vary significantly, but it is likely that a feeling of symmetry, or balance, would be pleasing at least to some degree to the greatest number of folks. Except for all the creative thoughts, never forget that the first job of any light is to provide illumination!

Laundry Sorters are boxes that help organize your garments for the wash. The most handy laundry sorters, additionally with Laundry Hampers take some of the drudgery out of your chores by providing a quick and easy way to split your whites from your colors and delicates. This way, things are on auto-pilot and your intelligence is free to consider other things without risking a mix-up or damage to your garments.

Laundry sorters together with Laundry Hampers are offered in assorted models for some specific tasks, for example those performed by commercial laundering plants. Most sorters meant for usage in the home have a tendency to be very much alike in form and function. It would appear that there just isn’t much of a public requirement for ingenuity and variety in the laundry sorters available on the market. Generally speaking, the general class of laundry sorters and laundry Hampers seem to exhibit rather poor change, with only basic shapes in a handful of everyday sizes. This situation is unlikely to improve unless folk take their kind of laundering more seriously!

Alright, that sure is a funny ( even crazy ) thought but hey, why not ; consider it : everything else has been made into an objet d’art why not ye olde humble laundry sorter? Yes, just give it some thought, designer laundry sorters! Luxury laundry sorters! For premium upscale high laundering haute blanchisserie!
No, truly, it would be the final frontier in fashionable furniture design. Of course , there are lavish golden toilets adorned with dear gems and fine glass, so why not something to match in the form of a rich and corrupt sorter! In fact , don’t the rich need some place for their soiled laundry? Oh, that is’s right ; they do their laundering through foreign banks. ;- )

But in all seriousness, in our 21st Century of speaking toilets with on-board computer chips and built in electronic sensors, why not mesh laundry bags and laundry sorters to match? O.K, so this is not Japan, a land of wacky gadgets and gadgets galore. And the rich don’t care about designer laundry sorters or upscale Laundry Hampers because they do not actually have to do any laundry themselves indeed, many never even wear the same clothes twice ( and that could be a fact, Jack ). But this is a superb idea for some ambitious young designer just out of art college to make his or her name. In fact , who’d have ever thought that repeating Campbell Soup cans on a canvas might be considered art?

Current advances in engineering have made home espresso machines easy to operate, including super-convenient hand-held form factors! Originating only in the 1970s, these home coffee machines have come a long way in nearly every way, from cost and size to procedure and output. But technological improvements can only go so far, many connoisseurs claim, with even the best hardware only rivaling, but not surpassing, the knowledge of a devoted barista.

Certainly, caffè espresso itself has come a long way from its beginnings in early Twentieth Century Milan, where the first espresso machines were presented to the world. There are now a wild variety of ways to provide it, since the term merely refers to a process of brewing and nothing else (hot water is pressurized before being forced through finely ground coffee). Some really fun ways to have your espresso are to serve it over Italian gelato (vanilla is the traditional favorite but any flavor will work well); serve it with sweetened condensed milk for extra thickness; and serve it with liquor like brandy for a real pick-me-up!

With espresso, variety is the name of the game. In Italy, its country of origin, they desire it dark in the south and light in the north: a variety of different mixtures of roasts and beans may be combined for different kinds of espresso (it is, after all, a process, and not a particular bean or level of roast). And now, thanks to the proliferation of chain coffee houses, it is common to find any number of syrups, spices, and flavor extracts added to a brew, whether espresso or otherwise. In fact, with so many different flavors and ways of serving it up, about the only thing still recognizably espresso about them all is the thicky foamy result that comes from the brewing procedure itself!

It was bound to happen sooner or later, a movie where cell phones feature prominently as the bad guy. Accounted on a real-life communications monitoring program of the United States government, “The Echelon Conspiracy” is a movie that visits old science-fiction tropes via the use of the most recent technology in telecommunications, the cell phone. Now this idea may be a surplus in present day, true, but think about when the innovation was not introduced thus constricting other ideas that go along with it. The cell phones play one of the most essential roles in the movie being the only form of communication and often, the bad guy.

In fact, cell phones only seem to figure in so conspicuously at first – it eventually turns out (SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT) that it’s a computer controlling everything behind the scense. Actually, technically speaking, it’s the software that’s run amok, software that has somehow achieved a certain level of awareness.

Two problems of great interest instantly spring to mind: the real-world Echelon program, still so much shrouded in secrecy that the U.S. government still does not validate or refuse its existence, and the curious phenomenon of self-arrangement, or spontaneous order, in nature.

Alas, the film does not target any of these points, actually, and by the halfway point of the movie even cell phones take a back seat to the standard Hollywood standbys of car chases and gun fights. This brought up the idea of advertising a fresh phone model into society. If the target audience does not have it already then it will be a appealing sight to see which might end up with them purchasing one. But if they recently have it, they will bring about much more faith on their phone and provider. But that’s not all, when a cell phone is publicized who else do you think is watching? That’s right, the other companies. Instead of competing why not just purchase some to introduce to their customers?

It’s not a bad movie, to be sure; the case is partaking enough considering the material they have to work with, which is your basic action-spy-thriller. And it all begins intriguing enough, opening with a woman mysteriously reading instructions in her mobile handset, to the point of descending into the Washington, D.C. metro’s tracks, where she meets her end – only to have our protagonist mysteriously receive the same mysterious phone in the mail during the next scene, a phone which, it turns out, provides the most prodigious of instructions concerning apparently random events, from airline crashes to casino jackpots. It’s an exciting premise, but ninety minutes of screentime almost guarantees that any treatment can only be overly facile.

You might feel that the expansion of coffee houses the past twenty to thirty years would lead to a decrease in the sale of coffee machines, but on the contrary they remain as popular as ever, with espresso makers one of the most ballyhooed products on late-night television. It’s a interesting thing, and will possibly not make a lot of sense on the face of it, but in fact the number of businesses dedicated to providing coffee has only made people want to buy coffee machines of their own!

Now why should this be? The answer points up to an intriguing attribute of human nature. But first think of why people should patronize coffee houses: it isn’t all about the coffee. Many restaurants, such as Starbucks, have hit upon the effective system that previously saw the rise of sidewalk cafes throughout Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: people required a nice place indoors! Getting away from cramped quarters at home, such establishments offered a relatively luxurious environment for the price of a cup of coffee. And it’s the same today, with students among the most faithful of customers for these chain coffee houses.

But why should people desire coffee machines, then? Well, in this case, it also isn’t essentially all about the coffee. That’s right! You’d feel that people who like coffee either go to coffee houses or buy coffee makers to use at home. But in both cases, it isn’t always about the coffee itself, but everything else relating to how they get their coffee!

In the case of a coffee house, people go for the ambience as much as anything else. In the situation of a home coffee maker, it’s about the convenience: no lines to wait on, but everything on a timer and ready when you wake up or come home, with the same range of flavors – all at a much reduced cost. And there’s always seating available!

Coffee machines are no problem, but there’s still something about specifically designed espresso machines that is so appealing. The term “espresso” refers to nothing more than a selected process of brewing coffee, whereby hot water is pressurized and strained via finely ground beans for a fast and highly concentrated dose of caffeine. But an espresso machine sounds especially attractive, something to not just have around in the kitchen but actually show off and use – and not just use in a mindless manner but use in a skilled way.

Certainly, a veritable job titles has been created to identify those who man commercial machines in coffee houses: barista. For espresso machines have traditionally required some level of competence to operate; it isn’t just a matter of pulling a handle. And in fact the first home models were still quite bulky and difficult to use, not to mention almost as expense as their industrial cousins. Developments in modern technology and manufacturing, nonetheless, have made today’s home espresso makers more streamlined in such respects while remaining just as capable where the final result is concerned.

Thus the increased popularity of espresso has been helped in no small part by the proliferation of do-it-yourself machines at home. Of course, as noted at the outset, espresso only refers to a process of brewing the coffee, where any combination of beans and roast levels may be used for a wide variety of tastes, and so simply making it is just the beginning: serving it up is the other half of the fun! For espresso can be enjoyed over ice cream, mixed with liquor, with condensed milk, and in any number of ways that have developed since 1903 when Luigi Bezzera first introduced his machine back in 1903. Indeed, variety is the name of the game when it comes to caffè espresso.
